Weekend!

Whoo hoo! I love weekends. Who doesn't? Although it's slightly less gratifying not having the feeling of physically coming home on a Friday afternoon...I guess shutting my computer will have to do. We've had a busy Friday night! This weekend we're going to a volunteer/adopter picnic with the group that gave us Penny, and needed outdoor chairs since we don't have any. So we stopped by Wal-Mart to pick up a couple of cheap but comfy camping chairs. Next up was a quick pop in to Michael's to get a new necklace clasp for one of my necklaces that has broken. I'm soooo happy that this particular necklace can be fixed with a $2 clasp...it was one of my mom's and a favorite of mine! I'll take a picture once it's all pretty. We got hungry so we stopped by Jason's Deli for sandwiches.

Finally, we went to Best Buy to get...a new iphone 4 for me! My contract has been up for renewal since June so I was eligible for a discount on the phone. The tech guy said we were lucky because the only ones they had were from people who had pre-ordered but never came to pick them up, so they had just started to sell them to the general public. I think a lot of people are getting cold feet over the antenna issue. But as long as mine works with the case we got, I'll be okay. I've spent the rest of the night transferring all of my contacts over, songs, apps, all kinds of fun stuff. I bought a couple of new games, one of which is Monopoly. So cool to see what can be done with a phone now. I remember when my parents first got cell phones and they were these HUGE dinosaur looking contraptions, and basically were only used in the car because they were too clunky to actually be carried anywhere.

So what's on tap for the rest of the weekend? So far I'm planning:

-grocery shopping
-washing the car...oh how filthy it is
-laundry (it piles up so quickly now that Michael is back home!)
-hitting the gym
-church
-greyhound volunteer/adopter picnic

I am super excited about the picnic, I'm sure Penny will have a great time playing with so many other dogs! Her biological brother will be there so I am very much looking forward to seeing them interact. Michael will be ready with his camera! Penny's brother was in the adoption program the same time as her and was adopted by another couple. I also hopefully will get some information about my role in running their ebay auctions...I will be doing a few a month for the group to help raise money. It's an ideal way for me to volunteer since I'm basically on the computer all day during the week.

Vino

Sometimes after a long day, there is nothing better than a glass of wine with dinner. We got this from a local winery about 10 minutes away in Eudora. I had no idea a winery was so close to us! It's pretty good, too. We had this with homemade chicken parm and spaghetti. Michael fixed it up...I helped by boiling water for him, haha. Michael cooks most of the meals in our house because he loves it. He's a great cook and I am super lucky! I am more of a cook if I have to type, and even then most of the time I'd settle for a grilled cheese or can of soup. I do love to bake, though. We bought a book about making artisan bread in 5 minutes a day and plan to give that a shot this weekend. I hope it works out, all the reviews have been great. It would be wonderful to have a loaf of fresh bread whenever we wanted it.

Date night!

First, some good news: My sister's vow renewal/wedding ceremony is officially happening! We were waiting to hear back from my dad's pastor, and she is available so it's on like donkey kong. They'll be having their ceremony on New Year's Day, so 1/1/11! I'm so excited. It will be beautiful and very meaningful. They had a very short, sweet ceremony in the living room of our parents house on March 27th so my mom could see her get married before she passed away. Now she gets to plan the traditional ceremony, reception, all of that. I can't think of better motivation for me to get back on track with a healthy lifestyle. I haven't exercised in over a month and a half due to my ankle injury, and I am so ready to go back to the gym. I think I will start tomorrow with the stationary bike, and build my way back up to my favorite piece of equipment, the elliptical. Baby steps!

Tonight, Michael and I decided to go on a date. We like getting out on days other than Friday or Saturday because restaurants are often less crowded and sometimes the specials are better (fried chicken Wednesdays at Wheatfields, anyone??) It's been over a month and a half since our last date night so we did it right: sushi! We went to Wa on Mass St, followed by Teapouro for a bubble tea. Great service at both!

Here's a shot of me getting ready. That's my mom's necklace. She had the best collection of funky necklaces, a lot of which are now in my possession.

The sushi platter. I wonder how many rolls you have to order to get a boat?? I ordered the maui roll and crabby dragon roll. The maui roll had shrimp tempura, asparagus, and cream cheese, with mango and mixed nuts on top. Sounds totally weird but it was really good! The crunch of the asparagus and creaminess of the cream cheese were a great compliment to the sweetness of the mango and saltiness of the soy sauce. Yum. I would definitely order it again. The crabby dragon had crab on the inside with eel and avocado on top. I love all of those ingredients so there was nothing wrong with it, but I missed tempura flakes...that would have put it over the top for me. Still, the rolls and a house salad left me beyond full. I had a light lunch to 'budget' most of my calories for our special dinner, and it was so worth it!

Waiting for my bubble tea at Teapouro, I decided to get a take away menu. I would love to come here sometime and get a big pot of tea and read a book. It's very comfy inside with lots of seating, and pretty reasonable prices. $3.99 for a large bubble tea (I had a small) whereas at House of Cha it's over 5 dollars. I love House of Cha but that's a pretty big difference in price! They also have a bubble tea card where once you buy 9 teas, you get one free. Love that kind of thing. The girl who made my bubble tea was super friendly and helpful with suggesting flavor combos. You can mix and match to create your own, how cool is that?

The tea. I got strawberry flavored, and it was delicious! I dig the tapioca pearls (bubbles).

It was a nice night out with my sweetie! Now we're at home watching Man v. Food. Talk about gluttony!

The furbabies

I thought it was time to introduce our furbabies since they're a huge part of our lives.

This is Penny, aka Pennymonster, Puppyface, Penners, and a host of other silly nicknames. We adopted her from MoKan Greyhound Adoption in January. She is my first dog ever, and I have been missing out! We adore her. She is a good transition dog for a cat person because despite being super fast, she's actually pretty lazy. Most days she loves sleeping on the couch or on top of squishy blankets and pillows. Her favorite thing in the world is a cheeseburger.

This is Pandy. I adopted her as a junior in college in 2005 from an animal shelter in Chapel Hill. She was the first furbaby and has put up with a lot over the years, including several moves, several other cats, and an 1100 mile drive to Kansas. She is the most chill cat I've ever met...you can do pretty much anything and it doesn't phase her one bit. Her full name is Pandora, which is an appropriate name because she tries to get into/open EVERYTHING.

This is Tigger, our big boy. I found him at our apartment complex in Morrisville NC in 2008. We had seen him the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and thought he was someone's pet. On the Friday after Thanksgiving, I saw him again near the parking lot, sitting in a patch of grass looking pitiful. My sister was driving and I told her to stop the car. I scooped him up and walked up 3 flights of stairs with him in my arms. He came inside with us and that was that! I fully believe he was put in my life on purpose to help me with the grieving process of another cat, Simon, who we had to put down in November of that year because he had lymphoma. Tigger came into my life just at the right time...I think God knew I needed something to take care of after losing Simon.

As you can see, I've adopted or found all of my animals. I am 100% against buying dogs and cats when there are so many in shelters and on the streets that need a good home. If you are looking for a specific breed, I highly recommend checking out petfinder or looking up rescue organizations for that breed-chances are there is one in your area. Purebreds get dumped into shelters every day, so if you're willing to wait, you CAN find the dog or cat you want without having to pay tons of money, and you're giving that animal a second chance at a forever home. I really can't think of many situations where someone would NEED to buy their dog, other than maybe someone using a dog for hunting and needed the proven bloodlines of hunting ability, or something like that. The problem with most breeders is that they are not reputable-aka not doing it to better the breed, they're just in it to make money. Most reputable breeders will already have homes picked out before they even start the process of getting a brood mama pregnant, they will have strict guidelines about the health of their animals, will be able to show you championship papers for the sires and dams, and will have a long waiting list. Hint: animals you can buy at a pet store, EVEN if they say they are not from puppy mills...are not from reputable breeders. Your neighbor who decided it might be fun to breed their dog...not a reputable breeder. That cute puggle/cockapoo/doodle mix is not from a reputable breeder because it's NOT a real breed! Those cutesy names were invented by people who cross breed on purpose in order to make the dogs sellable. "Mutt" doesn't have the same effect, which is what they are. Nothing against those dogs, because my aunt had one for years and she was the sweetest dog, but let's get real: it's not a purebred, it's a crossbreed, not recognized by animal kennel clubs, and to pay astronomical prices for one is just silly.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, it is just a passion of mine to help shelter animals! :)

Chasing Happiness

http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/celebrity.news.gossip/07/27/teresa.giudice.auction.ppl/index.html?hpt=Sbin

This article makes me sad. It's about one of the New Jersey Housewives on Bravo (yes, it is my guilty pleasure-I admit it!) and about how she and her husband are in a huge amount of debt, have filed for bankruptcy, and are now having their possessions sold at auction next month. I really feel for Teresa-how embarrassing and heartbreaking it must be to get to that point, and to have it splashed all over the news because she's famous. But at the same time, since I watch the show I know that she and her husband created a lot of their own mess. She ALWAYS bragged about having the nicest mansion...even on an episode a couple of weeks ago she bragged about how she lived in a "5 million dollar mansion". I bet it is so easy to get caught up in the "I have to have ____, I need _____" in order to fit in on the show, which profiles wealthy socialites and their day to day lives. The show wouldn't work if it showed us normal folk because it's not entertaining to see me sitting at the kitchen table cutting coupons. Instead it's got to be about her spending sprees, where in one episode, in less than an hour she hands over 2 thousand dollars for clothes for her daughters.

The article really brought me back to the lesson on Sunday at church, which was about how 'if it makes you happy' is a lie we tell ourselves in order to justify selfish actions. Think about it...if we're constantly buying the next 'big ticket' item, or wanting something better than what already have, that just leads to a life of comparing and never quite feeling like you measure up. And that's not how God wants us to live our lives. I think Teresa's story, for me personally, is a good example of what can happen if the "I gotta have it" monster grows out of control. I'm not saying not to have ambition when it comes to a career or whatever, but my take away from all this is that I'm very blessed with what I already have. An 8000 square foot mansion might be nice, but it's not going to make me happy. Plus it would be a bitch to keep clean. :P

If you're interested in listening to the sermon that talked about this 'if it makes you happy' true-ish statement, Pastor Matt's talk is here: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.eastlakelawrence.com%2FTrueish2.mp3&h=3b12e

Dad's visit

My dad flew in from Raleigh on Friday and (sadly) goes back tomorrow morning. We've had such a good time taking him to our favorite places in Lawrence. I am, and always have been, a Daddy's girl...I love spending time with him and can never get enough! This was his first trip back here since we moved to Kansas last August, so Michael and I had had some time to discover some of the gems of this town (well, in our opinion anyway!) Over the past few days we've been to Arthur Bryant's bbq in Kansas City, Papa Keno's, walked around downtown Mass St., ate at The Burger Stand, the Basil Leaf Cafe, Sylas & Maddy's ice cream, did a cookout in the back yard, visited a local winery, perused the book selection at Borders, he experienced a Kansas thunderstorm, church at EastLake, and of course played with Penny, Pandy, and Tigger.

Today he went with me to my appointment at the prosthetics and orthotics place to get my inserts for my shoes! I broke my ankle on June 9th while taking out the trash and have been in a boot pretty much since then. It was a challenge for sure because I consider myself very self sufficient when it comes to taking care of myself, my home, the animals, etc., so it was humbling to be forced to rely on Michael and later, my sister Lyndsay, to help me to do simple tasks like feeding the animals, cleaning the house, even getting in the tub. Thankfully it didn't take me too long to get used to the boot and to get around on my own, but still...today was SUPER exciting because I am officially done with the boot! The boot came up to mid-calf length and was like its own personal heat lamp affixed to my leg...and this summer has been sweltering as it is! The inserts will help support my ankle as the bone fully heals and will also help with my spine realignment, according to the guy who made them for me. Dad VERY generously offered to pay for them since insurance doesn't cover them...I was speechless. His generosity is incredible.

After the appointment we picked up Michael and went to the Free State brewery for lunch. One of those 'have to go to' places while in Lawrence. It was strange to be able to get a table without waiting...lunch is definitely the time to go! No pictures, but I had a smoked turkey sandwich that was delish. Huge portions so I have half of it waiting for lunch for me tomorrow, yum!

Next on our agenda today was to go see Inception, the new Christopher Nolan movie. I won't give anything away, but holy mind trip batman! Do you remember Memento? Same sort of 'what in the world just happened' experience. I really, really liked it, but I feel like I need to see it again so I'll pick up on more details! After the movie we went to Kohl's and I picked up a new pair of sneakers. My old ones were too narrow for my feet, which definitely became apparent when I put in the inserts. The new ones are much roomier and will give my toes room to breathe!

So that's about it for my mini 'stay-cation' with dad. He goes back to the airport early tomorrow morning, and then I will need to get back to work. Thanks to my visit to Border's, I have at least 3 new books I want to get soon. Thank goodness for my iphone...I pulled up my amazon app and found EACH book was at least 6 bucks cheaper, and because I have a prime membership it comes with free shipping! I am forcing myself to finish the 3 books I am currently reading first before I get any new ones. At the moment I am currently reading Traveling Mercies by Anne Lamott for my growth group, Little Kids, Big City by Alex McCord and Simon Van Kempen (haha yes from the Real Housewives of NYC), and The Year of Living Biblically by AJ Jacobs. Next up I want to get Jen Weiner's new book, Mennonite in a Little Black Dress (can't remember the author), and Orange is the New Black, a memoir of a girl who was in prison for 13 months. Lots of variety for me. So here's a few pictures from this weekend:

Cookout from this weekend on our charcoal grill...kc strip steak, baked potato, grilled asparagus. Mmmm!

Penny is a champion at begging.

I can picture her saying "You guys are so mean!" after we banished her inside. Poor puppy!

Intro

Hola amigos. This is our first foray into the world of family blogging. I (Kelly) was inspired by the blog of someone in my growth group, whose blog I maybe-sorta-kinda stalked because there were copious amounts of pictures of her precious baby girl. Sorry to say that there will not be any baby pictures here, at least not yet! But those of you who know my husband, Michael, know that our greyhound Penny is standing in as our de facto child, so there will be pictures of her! Along with Penny, you can expect to find on this blog:

-Pictures of our cats, Pandy and Tigger
-food (we like to take pictures when we try new places, and we're still discovering good eats in Lawrence/Kansas City/etc)
-travels
-our garden
-boring 'what we did today/this weekend' posts
-musings on life (maybe? We'll try not to get too heavy here.)

We thought this would be a fun idea since the majority of our family is back in North Carolina, and even though we abuse Facebook, we can go into more detail here if we're doing something particularly exciting. So for new friends/strangers who may have stumbled upon this blog, a little about us:

-we met in college at UNC-Chapel Hill, and are die hard Tar Heel fans/alums. That being said, we cheer for the Kansas Jayhawks anytime they don't play UNC. Hence the "Tarheeled Jayhawks" blog name.

-we moved to Lawrence from Raleigh, NC in August of 2009. Michael started a PhD program in Bioinformatics and is about to start year #2. No one has actually graduated from this program yet because it's brand new, but as far as we can tell, we'll be here for at least another 4 years.

-What in the heck is Bioinformatics? The 'layman's term' Michael has given me is that he does Biology on a computer. If you ever care for a 5-10 min spiel, Michael will be happy to go into detail.

-I work from home for a residential behavioral treatment center in Durham, NC. I do their social media: Facebook, twitter, blogging, internet marketing. I'm a lucky gal, because I love what I do and the people I work for!

-In addition to school and work, we keep busy with our herd of animals, writing (Kelly), gardening (Michael), home decorating (both), watching the Kansas City Chiefs attempt to play football (mostly Kelly), ACC and Big 12 basketball (both!!), attending EastLake Community Church and small groups (called Growth Groups), volunteering for EastLake and the greyhound adoption group that trusted us enough to give Penny a home, seeking out great local restaurants in Lawrence (both), and shopping (take a wild guess).

So that's probably enough for a first post, right? Did anyone even get this far? Bueller? Bueller?

Blessings,

Kelly & Michael
